课程简介:

"Introduction to the thermo-mechanical modelling of coupled problems

in a continuous medium"

B. Wattrisse & J.-M. Muracciole

Continuum Physics considers that systems are composed of a continuous medium submitted to some Physical solicitation. In this context, the response of the system is a combination of (i) the underlying conservation equations, (ii) the system geometry, (iii) the applied initial/boundary conditions and (iv) the description of the phenomenological behavior of the system. Depending on the nature of the studied system, the conservation equations can involve Mechanics, Electromagnetism, Heat Science, Chemistry, … which can be described within an ad hoc thermodynamical framework. As soon as several Physics are involved, we deal with coupled problems, e.g. Thermo-Mechanics, Electro-Mechanics, … These situations are widely encountered in different engineering fields such as sensor/actuator design, active/intelligent structures, …

Once the Physics are set, the engineering design usually deals with an optimal choice of geometry, loading or material behavior. This course focuses on the last category, and its objective is to present a general framework, based on the Thermodynamics of Irreversible Processes and the Generalized Standard Materials formalism to describe the response of systems involving several coupling mechanisms. In order to simplify the presentation, we will start to present a scalar description and we will enrich it to deal with vectorial and tensorial fields involved in general 3D situations.

The course will involve four 2h lectures (L1 to L4) and four 2h practical sessions (PS1 to PS4). The course outline is the following:

- L1: General introduction – Illustration of several couplings

- L2: Thermodynamical system

- L3: Thermodynamical potentials

- L4: Phenomenological description of classical behaviors

- PS1: From 3D description to simple rheological models

- PS2: Manipulation of simple mechanical behaviors (elasticity, viscosity)

- PS3: Example of a thermo-elastic model

- PS4: Numerical simulation of a thermo-elastic model
